runfrom asked: Hey I’ve been feeling really left out lately. And lonely. Some of my friends are going out and talking about how much fun they are having making out with people and having sex. Sometimes, I’d love to do that. I want to kiss people and have fun, but don’t because I’m waiting for God to send me the right guy. It sucks especially being a college student. Do you have any advice on what I should do or any encouraging words? Thanks!

Unka Glen answered: Let’s be clear, you’re not missing much. There is nothing sadder than watching unsaved college kids trying to have fun. It’s like watching a monkey humping a football. It’s kind of sad and embarrassing, even if the monkey appears to be enjoying himself. You just want to stop him, and tell him to wait for the Lord to send him the right lady monkey, so they can have the full, sensual, intimate monkey lovemaking experience that God intended.

Hooking up with random strangers sounds thrilling (who knows what diseases I might get!), but in the end, being with someone that really knows you, and knows your body, someone who knows how to both turn you on, and satisfy you, that’s something worth waiting for. A random hookup simply isn’t going to get that job done.

Yes, you should check to be certain that God is asking you to wait for the right guy, as opposed to going out and meeting him halfway on finding you. And yes, you should be doing what you can in the meantime to work on yourself , and anything that might hinder a good and healthy relationship. But in the end, if it comes down to waiting, what can I say? Waiting sucks.

Sure it’s worth it. Yes, you’ll be glad you did it God’s way. Having no relationship is better than being stuck inside a really dysfunctional relationship, absolutely. But waiting? Waiting just sucks. Sometimes you have to go through the desert to get to the promised land. 

And the desert part is not fun at all.

The desert has a way of testing, refining, and honing us. The desert changes us. You learn to truly depend on God in the desert. And maybe we’re a bit more thankful for that promised land when you get there. Maybe that thankfulness keeps us more focused on letting God call the shots. 

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 1:3-4)
